The word Tsilumos combines the words Tsil (Hebrew for “sound”) and Lumos (Latin for “light”). This festival offers Victoria lovers of music and dance new possibilities for enlightened engagement with contemporary dance and music in a casual, daylong celebration.

Concert 1 –11:30 AM
The Music of Eliott Carter
Joanna Hood, Ajtony Csaba, Dániel Péter Biró and the Lafayette Quartet perform works of this American master


Concert 2 – 2:00 PM
New Virtuosity
Kris Covlin, Mark McGregor, Tori Lindsay and Hannah Burton play works of Biró, Newcombe (Canadian Premieres), Berio and Poppe


Concert 3 – 3:30 PM
Xenakis and the Rumanian Tradition
Works by Xenakis, Avram and Nicolescu
Featuring Tzenka Dianova, Kris Covlin and percussion students from the University of Victoria School of Music


Concert 4 – 5:00 PM
Response 1
Featuring Lachenmann’s famous string quartet Gran Torso and a response-piece by Canadian Composer Darren Miller for felipe de almeida ribeiro performed by students from the University of Victoria School of Music

Featuring Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire and a response-piece by German composer Annette Brosin Übersetzungen performed by students from the University of Victoria School of Music


Concert 6 – 8:00 PM
Dancing in the Sound of Light
Ground-breaking works by Donatoni, Grisey and Czernowin performed by the Tsilumos Ensemble and special guests from the Suddenly Dance Theater

 

 

 

 

This daylong festival of contemporary music and dance will consist of a series of performances of exiting new music and dance from Canada and around the world. Virtuoso soloists Kris Covlin, Mark McGregor and Tzenka Dianova will present works by Avram, Biró, Newsome and Nicolescu. Once concert will be dedicated to composer Elliott Carter featuring Joanna Hood, Ajtony Csaba, Dániel Péter Biró and the Lafayette Quartet. 20th Century classics Pierrot Lunaire by Schoenberg and Gran Torso by Helmut Lachenmann will also be on the menu, played by students of the University of Victoria School of Music. A final concert will feature Canadian premieres of works by Czernowin, Grisey and Donatoni in coordination with the amazing dancing of the Suddenly Dance Theater. Throughout the daylong festival audience members will have a chance to talk with the composers and musicians about the concerts in a casual setting. Food and drink, specially designed to the music will be provided by Victoria Sprits.
